Barbara Jean Masters, age 82, of Acworth, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. Barbara was born in Otto, NC. Barbara grew up on what we fondly called "Mulberry" and played basketball on her high school team the Franklin High School Panthers. After graduation, Barbara left the small town of Otto NC and travelled to Washington DC where she worked for the FBI under the leadership of J. Edgar Hoover. This is where she caught the eye of a young handsome Marine named George (Rip) Masters. The two were soon married and their son, Scott David, was born in 1962 on Andrews Air Force Base in DC. Daughter Darla Jean joined the family in 1968 and the Marine Corp took them to Kaneohe, HI. Subsequent years took the family to Yuma, Arizona and finally to Marietta, GA.
Barbara worked for the school system in Cherokee County, GA until retirement. She was the hands and feet of the Lord. If you wanted something done everyone knew Barbara would help take care of it! She had active roles in her church serving on various committees plus she and Rip were founding members of the Woodstock Chapter of The Marine Corp League. Barbara was widely known for sending cards to people worldwide - you have very likely received a Christmas, birthday or anniversary card from her.
Barbara is survived by her children, Scott (Susan) and Darla (Clay), her grandchildren Harrison, Aly, Michael, Davis and Chase plus her siblings, Jessie, Tommy, Annette and Richard and all her double first cousins on the Pitts side of the family. She will be greatly missed by all but with happiness in their hearts knowing she's reunited with Rip.
In lieu of flowers, Scott and Darla know she would want funds to be sent to the "Rip and Barbara Masters Memorial Scholarship Fund" at Maj. Gen. W.R. Johnson Detachment #1311, PO Box 2733, Woodstock GA 30188 or donate online at https://www.mcl1311woodstockga.org/product-page/donation, click link, add to cart and at checkout, click "note" on bottom left and include text "Masters Scholarship Fund".
There will also be a well-marked area to receive donations at the visitation and service.
A visitation for Barbara will be held Friday, October 6, 2023 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Woodstock Funeral Home, 8855 Main Street, Woodstock, GA 30188. A funeral service will occur Saturday, October 7, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Woodstock Funeral Home.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.woodstockfuneralhome.com for the Masters family.
