Brian was my roommate at Kemper Military School our senior year of high school in 1986.  Brian and I met the very first night we both arrived in Boonville Mo.  I was from California and he was from NewYork.  Here we were in Boonville Mo, wow!  We were both there early in Aug for hell week football practice.  It was pouring rain and they put us in the band barracks.  I’ll never forget  Rodreigez looking at me and asking, hey you want a butt? Cigarette!  I wasn’t a smoker at the time but sad yes because I was so out of my element.  We talked about where we were from and how we arrived at this strange place and our stories were very familiar!   We connected, he made me laugh, and we were able to talk  to the powers that be that we should be roommates.  What A blessing!  We were brothers from that first moment having a cigarette together to the day we graduated and beyond!  He made our beds and I shined our shoes.  We stuck up for each other and worked together to get through this crazy thing that both he and I signed up for.  We were the minority in that respect.  Most were their on a court  order.  We chose to be there!  Crazy!  Brian was my rock, my defensive end, I was the outside linebacker.  He was my comedy relief when I needed it to get through the day.  We protected each other from everything!  I turned him on to Crosby Stills and Nash and he shared his love of Billy Joel, New York State of Mind!  He loved that song!!!  I have missed him so much and now that I know he is gone I miss him even more!  “Yo Joe you want a cigarette?”  I’ll never forget his kindness and loving friendship that I have carried with me all these years and have appreciated since the first night in the band barracks having a Marlboro!
