Emmett Allen Shubert, the youngest child of Adolph and Emily Shubert, was born in New Orleans and raised on the Mississippi Gulf Coast where he learned to shrimp, flounder and fish but Emmett's true passion was the automobile.
At the age of twelve Emmett began the hobby that would last a lifetime when he dismantled a car, given to him by his father, piece by piece. With great joy and care, Emmett cleaned the pieces, painted and repaired them and the put the car back together. To his amazement it ran and a passion was born.
As the boy grew to a man, there was no limit to the work he was willing to do to help provide for his family. From tug boats and factories to oil rigs and the sheriff's department, he did it all.
The creation and implementation of the air conditioner sparked the desire to reverse engineer (before the phrase was coined) and Emmett found his calling. Approaching the field with the same determination that he applied to his first car, he built a livelihood that would support his growing family and established him in the community as "the man to call" no matter the problem. And, while he excelled in this field, it was not Emmett's greatest accomplishment.
His greatest accomplishment, according to most, was his self-sacrificing nature. Whether in need of heat and unable to pay, or recovering from addiction, Emmett would be there with a supportive smile an well placed joke. However, he did not shy away from tough love when it was needed.
Even in his choice of employees, Emmett favored the underdog, turning his business into a therapeutic environment where those struggling to "turn their life around" or to "get back on their feet" could learn a trade, speak openly and be treated as the person they were at the moment and not as the mistakes they had made. He often told loved ones that most everyone deserved a second chance, that anyone could be saved through God's love, and that he was simply "carrying out the Lord's instructions".
Yet another area where he excelled.
Emmett is survived by his loving wife of forty years, Beverly, daughters, Donna Stone, Angie Giddens and Amanda Sanges, sons, Allen Shubert, Dale Taylor, Chris Shubert and Jason Shubert, sisters, Florine Allen and Gloria Krause.
Funeral services for Emmett Shubert were held October 21, 2010 at 12:30 PM at the Woodstock Funeral Home Chapel in Woodstock, Georgia, Pastor David Bowen officiating. Interment followed at Enon Cemetery in Woodstock, Georgia.
