Greg was a graduate of University of South Florida, where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He proudly served in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Langley Air Force Base. During his military career, he served three years in Vietnam, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant E-5.
Among the honors and medals he earned were the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal for his three-year deployment, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal. Greg also completed specialized courses in Aircraft Propeller RPM and Aircraft Propeller Tech Course GI30B, and he flew reconnaissance missions during his service in Vietnam.
While living in Springfield, Virginia, Greg met and married the love of his life, Lynne Marie Smith. Together they shared 51 wonderful years of marriage and raised three sons: Jason Michael Smith, Michael Lynn Smith, and Matthew Ryan Smith.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Lester Drew Smith, and Dorothy Shippley Smith, as well as his brother, Stanley Smith.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Lynne Marie Smith; his sons, Jason Michael Smith, Michael Lynn Smith, and Matthew Ryan Smith; his daughter-in-law, Nikki McGee Smith; and his cherished grandchildren, Gabrielle Rose Smith, 28, Sophia-Rien Brooke Smith, 16, Elijah-James Thomas Smith, 15, McKinley Vada Smith, 11, and Liam Alexander Smith, 9. He is also survived by his brother, Kim Smith, and his sister, Connie Tobias.
Greg had a lifelong love of aviation and motorcycles. While serving in the military, he earned his private pilot’s license and later built two airplanes himself: a KR2 two-seat composite taildragger and an RV6-A aluminum two-seat tri-gear aircraft. When he could no longer fly, he turned his engineering talents toward woodworking. He lovingly crafted wooden toys for the youth ministry at Wildwood Baptist Church, along with crosses and ornaments for the church’s Ladies Ministry and The Hope Center Pregnancy Crisis Center.
Greg also enjoyed motorcycle trips with his wife through the mountains of Virginia. Two of their favorite destinations were Skyline Drive and Harpers Ferry.
Greg will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. His family finds comfort in knowing he is in the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
