John was born September 29, 1950 in Athens, Greece to Efstathia Sotiropoulou and Sotirious Sotiropoulus. He moved with his family to Richmond, Virginia in February, 1961. He left Richmond to attend the University of Georgia where he played soccer, for which he had a lifelong passion, and formed friendships that would endure through the remainder of his life. He went on to graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University, then settled down and established himself in Marietta, GA where he worked as a real estate appraiser and investor.
In addition to his traditional work, John was an ardent entrepreneur and a fervent disciple of racing. Those two things combined with his own racing experience, lead him to invent a Global Positioning Satellite Tracking System for the racing industry, for which he holds several patents. Though he believed that to be his greatest accomplishment, during his time here on earth, he helped bring two beautiful souls into this universe, saved two lives, and touched many more.
His greatest joys were his two sons, John and Jack, racing, soccer, and boating. Though he traveled extensively, his favorite place to spend time, was in Hilton Head, SC with his boys.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Efstathia Sotiropoulou and his father Sotirious Sotiropoulus. He is survived by his sons John, Jr. and Jack, his sister Stella S. Ross and brother-in-law Eric T. Schultz, his aunt and uncle Yioula and Andreas Geronikolos of Athens, Greece and aunt Adamantia Sotos of Richmond, VA and his cousins Joy Burrell of Broomfield, CO, Deno Yiankes of Naples, FL, Julie Sepiol of Michigan City, IN, Nick Yiankes of Valparaiso, IN, Pam Bond of Virginia Beach, VA, John Grammenos of Richmond, VA, John Sotos of Richmond, VA, James Yangis, Greenwood Lake, NY, Eftychia Geronikolou, Athens, Greece, Costas Geronikolos, Athens, Greece, and Efstathia Sotiropoulus, Athens, Greece.
