Ann graduated from Columbus High School in 1953 and then moved to Atlanta, Georgia to attend Georgia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated from Nursing School in 1956. Ann's senior class elected her as the 'wittiest', which is a trait that was evident throughout her life. After nursing school, she spent a year at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill obtaining an additional certification in Public Health. She met her beloved husband, Francis Charles “Chick” Vossen at a restaurant outside Fort Benning, Georgia. They were married on November 22, 1958. Ann went on to obtain a BS Degree in Nursing from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in 1975. Ann held Nursing Licenses in Georgia, Nebraska, Texas, and Pennsylvania.
Ann and Chick moved 27 times in the US as well as Panama and Italy. Ann’s adventurous spirit made all these moves fun and exciting for her and her children. She was able to continue her nursing wherever Chick was assigned.
During their post in Italy, she and a fellow nurse wrote a grant to allow them to teach CPR to the Marines at the US Embassy in Rome. They also trained American servicemen on other US military bases in Italy. This training was also provided to American schools and Businesses in Rome. Ann trained additional instructors so the program would continue after she left.
Once they returned to Georgia, Ann was employed by the Georgia Department of Human Resources in the Child & Adolescent Health Programs. Ann was responsible for training nurses all over the state of Georgia. She retired from the state of Georgia in 1998. Ann then became a consultant and helped start the EPIC (Educating Physicians in Communities) Program. This program provides training to health clinics in Georgia on immunizations. Ann worked with this program traveling around the state for another 12 years.
Ann and Chick were blessed with 3 rambunctious children Chris, Beth, and Vicki. Through marriage, they gained Glenn and Michael as sons-in-law. Through these unions, she was fortunate enough to have 6 grandchildren Michael, Ian, Connor, Savanna, Elizabeth, and Zachary whom she adored. The Vossen house was always full of family and friends. Ann made all who visited feel welcome. Some of our fondest family memories are the summers at the beach. Ann enjoyed sharing her love of the beach with her grandchildren and her knowledge of the Southern Coastal region.
We have comfort in knowing that our dear mother is in heaven with our brother Chris.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making memorials in Ann’s memory to the American Red Cross or the Dementia Society of America.
