Tom was born on November 3, 1931 in Carnesville, Georgia to Thomas Clyde Fowler and Guynell Hall Fowler. Tom is survived by his wife, Glenda Warwick, his son, Thomas Hall Fowler (Beth), his brother, Howard Eugene Fowler and his four grandchildren, Molly Fowler Giddens (Sam), Thomas Hall Fowler II (Audrey), Jacob David Parker (Jordan) and Katherine Parker Sanders (Josh). He was blessed with four great-grandchildren, Chaapel Giddens, Wright Giddens, Quin Parker and Marlowe Sanders and other nieces and nephews.
Tom attended Canton High School and The University of North Georgia (formerly North Georgia University and State College). He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree and graduated in 1953. During his tenure at North Georgia he tried out and made the Varsity Baseball team where he pitched for 4 years. Tom loved baseball and after college he tried out and was signed on to the Atlanta Cracker’s team. The Crackers were the professional baseball team before the Braves and had several farm teams in the Southeast. Before he could start with the Crackers, he was drafted into the Army during the Korean conflict and was stationed at Ft. Jackson in South Carolina. While there he played for the Post Regimental team for 2 years, during which time he sustained an injury to his pitching arm. After his Honorable Discharge from the Army, and after an extensive rehab period, he attempted to pitch for the Cracker’s farm team in Baton Rouge, Louisiana but his injury prevented him from pursuing a professional baseball career. Tom continued to support North Georgia’s baseball program in person and financially for several years after his retirement and was inducted into the University of North Georgia’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019. Tom also went on to earn a Masters Degree at UGA.
Tom returned to his hometown of Woodstock, Georgia after his baseball career ended. He taught Biology at Canton High School until being appointed Postmaster in Woodstock, where he worked until he retired. He was always a tree-hugging mountain man and chose to make his permanent home in Ellijay, Georgia.
Tom was an avid Braves fan and spent his spare time hiking and camping in the North Georgia woods when he wasn’t enjoying a Braves game. Tom was a horticulturist and spent many hours raising orchids and other plants and was a major contributor to the Ellijay Garden Club’s annual plant sale.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom’s name may be made to the University of North Georgia Baseball program or Heartlite Hospice in Ellijay.
