Andrew Oldenquist passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026, in Columbus, Ohio. Andy was born in Evanston Illinois in 1932. He attended Northwestern University, Brown University, and was a Fulbright fellow in Germany from 1957-1958. While an instructor for the Philosophy Department at the University of Connecticut he met his wife Riek, born in Jakarta, Indonesia. They settled in Columbus, Ohio, where Andy received his PhD from THE Ohio State University. He became a professor of philosophy and later professor emeritus at OSU starting in 1962. During his long career he was a visiting professor at Moscow University and Leipzig University, Germany.
Andy and Riek were married for more than 60 years and were active members of Opera Columbus and supporters of many other arts and social organizations in Columbus. Andy had a life-long love of adventure and traveled with his family to Indonesia and all over the United States. Andy and Riek spent their retirement visiting countries in Asia, Europe, Africa, and South America.
Andrew is survived by his children Nina Oldenquist, Mark Oldenquist (Michele), grandchildren Emily, Katelyn, Clayton, and Alden, and son-in-law Chris Smith.
Andrew was a wise and gentle man, a true Renaissance man with deep interests in science, art, literature, nature, and his exquisite gardens; he was a good friend to so many who were touched by his life. Andy’s life will be celebrated later this Spring, when he and his wife will be laid to rest together in Columbus Ohio. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Opera Columbus.
