Beverly S. Fatig (90) died on April 1, 2022 under hospice care at the Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio. Born in New Kensington, PA; she was the only daughter of Philip Delbert and Edythe Marion (Hildreth) Springer. As a teenager, the family moved to a farm outside of Lisbon, OH where Bev worked milking the cows - by hand - and raised her pet pig, Harriet, until after graduating from Lisbon High School and left to study at Kent State University. It was there she met, Raymond O. Fatig, Jr. whom she married after she graduated from Kent with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She worked at University Hospital in Cleveland while he was in army basic training. They moved to Huntsville, AL for his advanced training before spending several years in White Sands, NM where their family increased with the addition of their son, Raymond, III. The family returned to central Ohio because Bev missed the change of seasons.
Settling in Columbus in their Air Stream trailer and worshiping at Fourth Avenue Christian Church, their family increased with the addition of twin girls, Patrice Rachelle and Beverly Michele. Four years later, and now in a house, the last child, Megan Lynn, arrived.
Shortly after the last addition to the family, Beverly began teaching in the Columbus Public Schools; but, still found time to bake delicious treats for her family and church events and to sew clothes for her children. The family were charter members of Karl Road Christian Church where Bev was an active member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship and served in the diaconate and as an elder. She earned a Masters’ Degree from The Ohio State University. She later became a school administrator with Columbus Public Schools. She served as a member of the Olentangy Local School Board after her children graduated from the district. She became an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, professional society for women educators.
After retiring from teaching, she traveled, often camping with her husband, around the U.S., including taking an Air Stream trailer, with their grandson, to Alaska. In 2012, they traveled to Hawai’i, completing their visits to all 50 states. In between the numerous trips, she served as a docent at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium where she could be often found with her beloved gorillas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her daughter Megan, her parents and her eldest brother, Ronald N. She is survived by her son Raymond, III (Jody); daughters Patrice and Michele Koenig (Timothy); grandson Brent Christopher (Brittan) and great-grandsons, Garrett, Holden, and Warner; and her youngest brother, James P. (Kathleen), along with loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
Donations in her memory can be made to Christian Church in Ohio/Camp Endowment Fund (https://www.ccinoh.com/donation.aspx), Gamma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, or the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium (https://give.columbuszoo.org/).
