Beverly Szabo, 89, of Westerville, passed away on December 3, 2025. She was born on December 19, 1935, in Chicago, to the late Donald and Thelma (Ross) Black. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Norman E. Szabo; grandchild, Matthew Szabo; brother, Bob Black; and son-in-law, John Rakos.
Beverly was born in Chicago, Illinois, and spent her childhood moving to several different cities before the family settled in Ohio. She graduated from Berea High School in 1953 and went on to attend Ohio University, where she was a proud member of Delta Gamma sorority. It was on the Ohio University campus that she met the love of her life, Norman. They married and built a rich and joyful life together, living in multiple states while raising their four cherished children, before making their permanent home in Worthington, Ohio.
Beverly was the heart of her family—an extraordinary homemaker who devoted herself fully to her husband and children, always present with love and unwavering support. She possessed a fiercely competitive spirit that shone brightest at the bridge table, where she was a formidable and accomplished player, and on the tennis court, where she competed at a high level for many years and was a valued member of several state and sectional championship teams.
Once her children were grown, Beverly brought her warmth and organizational gifts to a position as an administrative assistant with an oil and gas company, a role she enjoyed until she and Norman retired to the peaceful shores of Lake Murray, South Carolina. After Norman’s passing, Beverly returned to the Columbus area to be closer to family and friends, spending her final years surrounded by those she loved.
Beverly will be greatly missed by her children, Scott (Patty) Szabo, Sharon Rakos, Sandy (Vinny) Gaus, and Steve (Laura) Szabo; grandchildren, Sarah, Mitch, Jessica, Melissa, Brad, Emily, and Shannon; great-grandchildren, Walter and Grey; and numerous extended family and close family friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 31 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Worthington Moose Lodge 1970 Schrock Road, Columbus, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
