Born on September 5, 1947, to Jack and Margie Lewis, Dan grew up in Northeast Ohio and graduated from Hudson High School in the Class of 1965. He continued his education at Denison University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1969. While at Denison, Dan was a proud member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and played collegiate baseball, a sport that remained close to his heart throughout his life. He later earned his MBA from the University of Dayton and built his career in commercial insurance where he took great pleasure in the relationships he built along the way.
Dan’s loyalty was deepest for his family and friends. He was a hands-on, devoted father, husband and grandfather who had great pride in his children’s achievements. Dan deeply cared for his mother, father, brothers, cousins and many friends. He never missed an opportunity to talk and spend time with others and his love of cooking, gardening and landscaping helped ensure all felt welcome in his home.
Dan had a passion for sports throughout his life. Playing in his younger years, cheering on his kids and grandkids and always tuning in to watch his teams. He was a loyal fan of Ohio State sports and all things Cleveland, despite the frequent heartbreak that comes with being a lifelong Browns fan.
Dan is survived by his devoted wife, Cindy; his children Matthew (Tara) Lewis of Miami, Florida; Andy (Jen) Lewis of Worthington, Ohio; Libby (Imanol) Larequi of Dallas, Texas; Carly (Dave) Hazard, and Chelsea (Nathan) Hatem both of Upper Arlington, Ohio; his brother John Lewis of Boulder, Colorado; sister-in-law JoAnne Lewis of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; and in-laws Rita Stahl, Dan (Bobbie) Stahl, Kim (Brett) Passineau, Tom (Debbie) Stahl; and grandchildren Jack, Van and Wolfe Lewis, Grace, Jacob and Eleanor Hazard and Isabella and Cecilia Hatem, along with a wide circle of extended family and friends who will miss him greatly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Margie Lewis, and his brother Jim Lewis of Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
The family welcomes friends to a gathering in honor of Dan’s life at Camp Mary Orton, 7925 N High Street, Columbus, on Sunday, October 19 from 2-4pm.
