Martha Mae McCullough, 99, of Columbus, was called home on January 23, 2023. She was born May 15, 1923 in Glenshaw, Pennsylvania to Louis and Mary Wagner. Being raised in Glenshaw, just outside of Pittsburgh, Martha shared stories of her and her siblings walking along the railroad trestle above the creek and then waiting for a train to come down the tracks before they would jump into the water below.
During World War II, Martha served in the U.S. Coast Guard. She joined the Coast Guard because the Marines “already had their quota of women for the day.” While serving in the Coast Guard, Martha met her husband, Bob, in New York City, where they were both stationed. Martha and a friend were late getting back to their dormitory. Showing a bit of her mischievous side, they knocked on the commander’s door and ran off. Two MPs ran after them. Bob was one of those MPs that night, so he told her that he would have to arrest her. Martha was worried about being arrested, so Bob decided that he would not arrest her, if she agreed to go out with him. Martha, needless to say, was not arrested. She and Bob were married in Etna, Pennsylvania on May 4, 1946.
Martha was a wonderful mother to her and Bob’s seven children, who at times tried her patience. Yet she loved them through it all. She worked as a seamstress for JC Penney Co. for 42 years and finally retired at the age of 77. Along with being a wonderful mother, Martha was known to be a talented and industrious gardener and was recognized several years in a row for having the prettiest yard in the neighborhood.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her 9 siblings, her husband Robert E. McCullough, and great grandson Wesley Landrum.
Martha is survived by and will be greatly missed by her daughter and primary care giver, Ruth (Bryan) Willey; sons Robert G. (Jeanne) McCullough and Richard McCullough; daughters Diane (Doug) Carman, Marsha (Mike) Pesek, Cindy (Dan) Stone, and Mary (Mark) Vivis; as well as 20 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren and a large extended family.
Martha’s family will receive visitors from 12pm to 5pm on Sunday, January 29, 2023 at Schoedinger Funeral Service, 6699 N. High Street, Worthington. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am on Monday, January 30, 2023 at St. Patrick Church, 280 N. Grant Street, Columbus.
