Rachel A Smith, 66, of Sunbury, Ohio, passed away on May 12, 2026 at home in the arms of her husband, Herschel Smith. Born in Columbus, Ohio, to Perry and Margaret Schwartz, she graduated from Bexley High School and attended the University of Akron. Rachel worked for the State Of Ohio Division of Wildlife District One. She met her husband, Herschel, on August 17, 1978, at National Trail Raceway; Rachel was 18 and Herschel was 19. The following night Rachel had her first date with Herschel, her future husband, and the rest is history. Rachel married Herschel on May 19, 1984. Throughout her childhood, Rachel followed the Jewish faith and attended Temple Israel Columbus where she received formal religious training. After meeting Herschel, Rachel later became Christian and was baptized at Maize Road Baptist Church. Rachel was a devoted, loving wife who cherished her family, friends and, of course, her dogs Sofie, a papillon and Ginny, a shelty. Rachel enjoyed spending time outdoors observing wildlife, basking in the warm sun, boating and beach time. Other pastimes included listening to music, frequently attending concerts, watching professional tennis, reading her bible, gardening, and sitting on the dock at her pond feeding the fish. While Rachel lived most of her life in Ohio, she also resided in Fremont, California, and Southern Rhode Island. Rachel remained positive, loving, and courageous throughout her life. Despite multiple health issues, Rachel remained strong in her faith.
Rachel is survived by her husband Herschel, Sister Rebecca Murphy (Audie), father-in-law Herschel C Smith, brother in laws Ron Smith (Karen), Don Smith (Debbie), Steve Smith (Carol) and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and grand nieces and nephews who will miss her greatly.
She is preceded in death by her parents Perry and Margaret Schwartz (Hammond), mother-in-law Mildred Smith, and sister-in-law Sheri Smith.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Rachel’s memory to the American Parkinson’s Disease Association. (https://support.apdaparkinson.org).
