Riek Oldenquist

Riek Oldenquist passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 4, 2024, in Columbus, Ohio. Riek was born in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1932. After college she came to the United States to study English Literature at the University of Connecticut, where she met Andy, her husband of more than 60 years. Riek and Andy settled in Columbus in the early 60’s, and she received a second master’s degree from Kent State University and went on to work for the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. She was a dedicated member of THE Ohio State University Women’s Club, Opera Columbus, and many other musical, art, and social organizations. She traveled the country and Indonesia with her family, and later in life traveled the world with her husband.

Riek is survived by Andy, her children Nina Oldenquist and Mark (Michele) Oldenquist, grandchildren Emily, Kate, Clayton, and Alden as well as son-in-law Chris Smith, her brother, and extended family in Indonesia. She was beloved for her adventurous and kind spirit and will be missed by all who knew her. The family will hold private services.
