Susan Bateman Severs, age 58, of Columbus, passed away peacefully on November 26 at Kobacker House, surrounded by love from family and close friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Franklin Lee Bateman, Jr.
She is survived by her mother, Judith Bateman; brothers Craig Bateman and Mark (Larissa) Bateman; sister Courtney (Aaron) Petrasko; nieces and nephews Chase, Reed, Katie, Lauren, Nathan, Pierce, Clare, and Regan; her boxer, Eleanor; cousins, aunts, and many dear friends. She was grateful for the fellowship of Bill W. for the past 18 years.
Born and raised in Worthington, Susan graduated from Thomas Worthington High School in 1985. She attended Miami University and later graduated from The Ohio State University Fisher School of Business. Susan worked for many years at VSP as a Senior Client Operations Specialist and was respected by clients, partners, and coworkers for her work ethic, professionalism, and warmth.
To the St. Charles Preparatory School community, Susan was “Aunt Susan,” a SuperFan and a constant source of support for the water polo, swim, and lacrosse teams. Her Taco Tuesday tradition became a defining part of the boys’ experience. Many athletes shared how her home felt like a second home and how her commitment to welcoming them each week for a meal made them feel connected and valued.
Their messages reflect her impact. One boy wrote, “You helped make this team feel like a family.” Another said, “The last few years with the team have been some of the most memorable of my life, and you were a huge part of that.” A younger player added, “I have never met my own aunts or uncles, and I hope that when I do, they are as welcoming as you.” After winning the state championship, the boys held up signs that read, “Thank you, Aunt Susan! We love you!”
Beyond St. Charles, Susan coached her nieces’ OYAA lacrosse teams with her sister Courtney and was known for her baking, her Christmas cookie exchanges, and her willingness to show up for others. Friends and coworkers shared stories of how she offered guidance during illness, loss, divorce, and other difficult moments, as well as how she celebrated their small, everyday joys. One friend said Susan taught her that “success is not painless,” a lesson she lived with courage throughout her long fight with cancer.
Susan’s spirit of caring, service, and genuine connection touched many lives. Her legacy is one of selflessness, strength, and community.
