She and her twin sister were born on June 4, 1936 to Sigurd and Hazel (Hendrickson) Shogren in Yakima, WA. She resided in Yakima, WA most of her life.
As kids, she and her sister worked in the summers with the family in the orchards, fruit warehouses and hop fields. She graduated from Yakima High School in 1955. After graduating, she worked as a waitress at Barwoods on Yakima Avenue where she met her husband, Don Hutchinson. They were married on August 25, 1957. She took business classes at Yakima Business College. She was the Secretary/Treasurer for her husband’s business, Don’s Artistry in Gold. They had one daughter, Kristina, in 1967.
Arlene was very involved with her church, Community of Christ. She was active in the music department and taught Sunday School. In the earlier years she was involved in church women’s meetings, making quilts and goodies for church bazaars and bake sales. She played piano for church services regularly until recently. She also embroidered and crocheted. She was part of the Bel Canto Choir in the mid-1960’s. She and Don were active members of the Sons of Norway Lodge in the 1970’s. She volunteered numerous hours with the Yakima School District playing piano for the choir at Lewis and Clark Jr. High in the early 1980’s. She earned the Golden Acorn award for her hours of service.
Arlene enjoyed playing the piano, camping, road trips and spending time with family. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, canning, baking and going to the casino. Many people loved her apple pies and asked her to make their pies for the holidays. She was a kind, generous person who was loved by many and will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her husband Don Hutchinson of Yakima, WA; daughter Kristina Chandler (Tod) of Yakima, WA; grandchildren Adam, Samantha and Tyler all of Yakima; her sister Darlene Martin (Charles) of Kent, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Sigurd and Hazel Shogren.
Although she loved flowers, she made regular donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Outreach International. She would have appreciated any donations to St. Jude or Outreach International in her memory to help their cause.
