On February 13th, 2026 we lost our beautiful angel, Destiney Breeze Birkby at just 28 years old. Destiney was born November 21st, 1997, to Dawn Birkby and Darin Angiano in Yakima. She grew up in Ahtanum and had built her life in the same home she was born and raised. From a very early age Destiney was drawn to all animals, her fascination began with bugs, frogs, spiders, turtles and snakes, and that passion immediately grew with every dog, cat, horse, pig, chicken, cow, duck, llama and possum that crossed her path. Throughout her life she surrounded herself with them - pouring her heart and soul into caring for them. A fierce advocate in the rescue community, her compassion reached far beyond the creatures she nurtured. She loved her people just as deeply, always making their well being a priority.
Her childhood was filled with vacations to Sea World, Disneyland, The San Diego Zoo, family beach trips, pumpkin parties and camping adventures to Lake Curlee, Lake Roosevelt and The Nile. It was always undeniable her heart and purpose belonged to animals. From the first pony (Little Bit) and first and only llama (Sparky), her world revolved around the beloved companions she cherished, and she remained faithfully by their side. She later joined the Sage Brush Riders 4-H club with a full-sized horse (Dish). Alongside her family, she enjoyed her time showing at the Fair each year, collecting several trophies and ribbons. In 2012 she was a part of SunSation Drill Team, competing in her first equestrian drill competition and participating in local parades.
Destiney was deeply devoted to her animal family, tending to them with unwavering dedication, responsibility and exceptional care. From her teenage years on she never spent a day or night away from them, always placing their needs first. With her gentle manner, she had a remarkable and unique gift for connecting with animals. She was never afraid and they trusted her, always surrendering to the comfort of her open arms. Her welcome mat read “rescue is my favorite breed” and she lived those words fully. She rescued countless dogs and cats, transforming her home into a safe haven for lost and neglected animals and nurtured them back to health. Many of her fosters would find their forever homes with her, as she believed no one could love and protect them in quite the way she could. Destiney only worked jobs that aligned with her passion. Most recently working at EarthWise Pet Nutrition Center & Wellness Spa, where she was expanding her knowledge on their dog grooming team.
She was excited about the future, she was growing, with so much ahead of her. We were all so proud of her, the remarkable person she was and the big plans she was making – growing her dog grooming career, renovating her home, helping ALL the animals, planting a new garden and even planning her first trip to New York.
Destiney was a free spirit - fearless, resilient, loyal and fierce. She worked hard, loved deeply, and brought a bright positive light into this world. An early riser who welcomed each sunrise. She was happiest outdoors: Riding her horses Maggie and Roxy bareback in the pasture at her home, building bonfires, riding 4-wheelers, getting muddy, being in the mountains, sledding, chasing her chickens, gathering fresh eggs, wrangling her pig Frank, mowing her lawn, walks with her herd, and summer days at the lake. She was incredible at finding love for life and beauty in the little things - sunsets, rainbows, a quick “I love you” or “have a good day” to a friend or family member, a cup of coffee in her favorite mug, a full moon, pickling her favorite home-made asparagus, dressing up her dogs for every holiday, FaceTime calls with her sister, a blooming sunflower, cuddling her kitties and any moment spent with her loving family and friends.
She lived with a judgement-free, open heart, and tender soul. Her compassion for others was evident in the way she consistently checked in, freely shared her love, and stood beside anyone who needed her. Never missing a chance to offer her support. Through her 28 years of life, Destiney built countless friendships with those who will miss her infectious smile and kind heart.
Her family is devastated beyond words to lose her and say goodbye to a beautiful soul whose life was tragically taken from us all far too soon. Destiney – we love you to the moon and back, always and forever.
