George W. Findley, 98, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Wednesday, August 3rd, 2016. He was born in Yakima, Washington on October 4th, 1917, the sixth of 6 children. George lived on an apple orchard in Selah, WA for much of his childhood. After graduating from Selah High School, George attended the Yakima Business College and then moved to Wenatchee to work. In 1944 he went into the service and was honorably discharged in 1946. After leaving the service, George went back to Wenatchee and met Millie where they enjoyed 40 years of a happy marriage in Yakima. He lost her in 1992 to cancer.
George was in business with his brothers for 28 years operating the Findley Brothers Garage. They were revered as the most honest auto repair guys in Yakima. After closing their business in 1972, George operated a productive apple orchard in Naches Heights.
George loved to be with his family on vacations and enjoyed golf, cards, fishing, sports as well as quiet evenings at home and on the patio. One of his favorite things was the family vacation each summer where he and his family would travel to a new destination to fish, golf, explore the area and enjoy time away with the ones he loved. He was delighted when he got a visit from his grandchildren who took time away from their busy schedules to come and spend time with their grandfather. George always enjoyed watching sports on TV and Seahawk and Mariner games were by far his favorite.
He is survived by his wife Dawn (Kohr) Findley, his daughter Jan & Art Jones of Bayview, Idaho, his son Jerry Findley from Yakima, and two grandchildren, Shawn Findley and Tami (Findley) McBride.
At 88, George met Dawn playing pinochle at the Harmon Senior Center, they married in 2006 and cherished 10 happy and active years together. He enjoyed visits from her family, Tim and Monique Kohr, Jon Kohr, Jenny & Jason Chynoweth and his wife’s grandchildren Audrey, Logan and Kora.
While the family grieves his passing, we are grateful he passed peacefully in his own home. George always had a great sense of humor, throwing his quick quips into most every conversation. George was the kind of guy that everyone loved; meet him once and you felt you were his best friend forever. He always brought a smile to everyone’s face who knew him.
His family often discussed how they grew up in an “Ozzy and Harriet” world at home. We all were blessed with the most wonderful father, grandfather, uncle, and husband a person could ever have.
Services will be held at Keith and Keith Funeral Home, 902 West Yakima Avenue, Yakima, WA on Sunday, August 7, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Memorial Hospice in memory of George Findley, 302 S. 10th Ave., Yakima, WA 98902.
