Jack Walker, who co-owned East Valley Pharmacy with his wife, died January 12 at a local
hospital. Jack liked people, wanted to help them, and wanted to be his own boss. When he
learned that a small drug store in Terrace Heights was available from Mel Carey, he purchased it
in 1972 and moved to Yakima from the Washington coast.
Jack was born in Chicago in 1928, lost his father in a hunting accident, and moved with his
mother to Missouri, Iowa, and Great Falls, Montana where he finished his K-12 education. He then enlisted in the Army and was sent to Korea. After remaining in the Reserves, he was called
back and was ordered to work in a hospital in Arizona. After that he was one of the fortunate ones who was able to use the GI Bill and chose pharmacy as his major.
When East Valley Pharmacy closed in 1992 Jack said that we had been very lucky, that the
people or Terrace Heights have been like a big family in that they have supported us and we've
tried to be supportive of them. The drug store sold a variety or gifts and goods and did everything
frorn selling stamps to making emergency deliveries to those unable to make it to the store. The
pharmacy was originally founded as Pioneer Drug in Yakima, was purchased by Mr. Carey in the
1930s and moved to Terrace Heights in 1961.
Since the Walkers could not find a buyer interested in the hours it takes to run your own
Business, they wanted to be able to do some things before their health might give out. That they
did; even when health did not cooperate. They were able to visit the USSR, quite a few countries
in Europe, spend some sunny winters on Jack s favorite Hawaiian island, and participating in
activities concerning people in Terrace Heights. Anyone wanting to share memories can send
them care of www.keithandkeith.com
We would especially like to thank Dr. Albert Brady of Washington Hematology/Oncology, as
well as Dr. Brent Herr of Northwest Medicine, the competent and caring staff of ICU at Memorial Hospital, and all of the friends and neighbors who have offered help. Jack is survived by his wife Jacqui, son Steve, niece Julia, brother-in-law Pierre, and cousin Sally.
