

Shortly after she was born her parents purchased a small farm in Mabton Wa. where sister Barbara and brother Edward were born. She grew up with a strong family faith and attended church regularly, while enjoying her mother serving as Church Organist.
She attended school in Mabton Wa. with one of her first fondest memories being that she got to ride the big yellow school bus in to school each day. While in High School she was a Majorette and worked as an usherette in the Mabton movie theater. A 12 year senior, she graduated in 1953. After high school she attended Central Washington University in Ellensburg Wa for 2 years, studying Home Economics, where she met and fell in love with Joel Tate at a Homecoming dance. They married September,1955.
She then continued her education in Pullman Wa, at Washington State university, working summers in Connell, Wa. cooking for Wheat Harvest and where her eldest son Curtis was born in 1956.
After Joel's graduation they moved to San Diego CA as he accepted an engineering offer with General Dynamics. While in San Diego, Son Brian was born in 1960 and Daughter Kathryn 1965.
In 1967 they moved to Costa Mesa, CA. as Joel took a position with Philco-Ford Aero-neutronics.
Their family was avid 'Dune Buggy' lovers and spent many weekends at Glamis sand dunes, or Pismo Beach, while being members of the "Bugs" Dune Buggy club.
In Summer of 1973 They came back home to Washington in order to be near Family. In 1976 they purchased an orchard in the Granger area, where they remained until retirement. Janice enjoyed being a Sunday School teacher at the United Methodist Church in Sunnyside. She loved to bake, sew, quilt, garden and travel. Joel and Janice Traveled often whether it be on a Cruise, a trip to Hawaii or spending many weeks in their Motorhome. They were snowbirds and spent half their time in Tucson AZ where she had many Friends and activities.
She was a fine seamstress and was always making her kids and grandkids something to wear as well as winning several prizes at various fairs for items she made and entered.
Janice loved her kids and grandkids dearly. There wasn't anything she wouldn't do for them. She enjoyed being a Den Mother for boy scouts, volunteering in the classroom, making cheerleader outfits as well as whipping up any baked goods needed at the last minute.
After retirement they settled at Summitview Country Condos in Yakima. She became a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and there she formed many friendships and was a large part of her church community.
Janice is preceded in death by her Parents, Harlan and Kathryn Shinn, her husband Joel C Tate, her brother Edward Shinn. She is survived by her sister, Barbara Gall. Her 3 Children, Curtis and (Jackie) Tate, Brian and (Judith) Tate and Kathryn Tate. Her grandkids, Elizabeth Tate, Kristina Perez, Kevin Tate, Corie(Ryan) Ratliff ,Stephanie (Louis) Santana, Sheena (Marcus) Torres, Michael Tate, Hannah (Ronnie) Tate, Hollie(Jake) Hatch, and Heather (Mauro) Tate. Several great-grandkids and 1 great great granddaughter.
A visitation for Janice will be held Thursday, January 2, 2025 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Keith & Keith Funeral Home, 902 West Yakima Ave, Yakima, WA 98902. A funeral service will occur Friday, January 3, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Keith & Keith Funeral Home.
