While reflecting on Mary’s life, she will be remembered as; a believer, daughter, wife, mother, sister, educator, mentor and friend.
Mary was born on May 7, 1931 in Yakima, Washington, the middle of three children, to Enrico and Lena (Batali) Favilla. Raised in the Harrah area, on what is now known as Favilla Brother’s Farm, Mary attended parochial school in Yakima, earned her Bachelor’s degree in education from Seattle University and a Master’s degree in Special Education from Central Washington University.
Mary was married to George Vincent Lombardi on September 20, 1952, eventually settling in the Yakima Valley where they nurtured and raised their 5 children. A life-long educator, Mary worked 21 years as a classroom specialist in the Yakima School District where she touched the lives of her students, especially those with special needs. Mary set an example of her love of God and life through the patience, kindness and love she gave to her family, student’s and the friends she made along her journey through life.
Mary is survived by her husband George, to whom she was married for 64 years, and their 5 children; Teresa, Paul and his wife Debra, Mark and his wife Susan, Marian and her husband Tim, and John and his fiancée Andrea. In addition, Mary is survived by her brother Edward Favilla and his wife Rosalie, her sister-in-law Patricia (Ambrozetti) Lombardi, 14 Grandchildren and 12 Great Grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her older brother Joseph Favilla, Sister-in-law Jeanne (Perrault) Favilla and Brother-in-law Gene Lombardi.
Mary loved and was devoted to her family. With family spread out from Pennsylvania to Arizona, Washington and Alaska, she and George were often flying somewhere to visit their loved ones. While she lived in Eastern Washington, they often flew out of Seattle so they could visit their three kids in the Puget Sound area more. Mary and George may have attended more high school and college graduation ceremonies for their kids and grandchildren than any two other people in the state. They simply did not miss momentous events in their family’s life. Mary held education in high esteem, and her children and grandchildren were all highly educated.
