Born in Bellingham, WA on April 14, 1952, he was the second son of Beverly Reedy and Gilbert Barnes. Curious and quiet, he was busy from the beginning, filling his pockets with treasures like frogs and rocks and defending his older brother Dave. Phil graduated from Davis High School in Yakima, WA, where he played football. Following graduation, he married his high school sweetheart Marcy Hanthorn. They had two children, Matt and Michele. For over 25 years, Phil supported his family financially as the meat manager at Buttrey's in Yakima. When not working, Phil was often found goofing and playing with his wife and kids.
After Marcy passed in 2004, Phil found a new joy and life partner in Hope Terry-Marquis. They married and for 17 years were true best friends and life partners. They committed to each other, to the Lord Jesus, and to their families. They served their community and family constantly and in many ways. Phil made a second career in real-estate, sharing his business and even an office with Hope. Phil’s free time was spent volunteering at the church, fishing, golfing (often with Hope by his side), and attending the school and sporting events of their growing, blended family of children, step children and grandchildren. Phil and Hope enjoyed spending free time at home tending to their yard and garden, and also in restoring their family cabin and property in the mountains of Eastern Washington. They also loved travelling, sometimes as a couple and other times with grandkids in tow. Their favorite destinations were Mexico, Palm Springs and Lake Chelan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers David and Raymond, and his sister Bernadine. Phil is survived by his wife, Hope Barnes and his sister Brenda (Fred) Sutherland, along with his children Matt (Suzie) Barnes, Michele (Walter) Waddel, step-children Hollie and Travis Terry (Summer); grand-children Rylan, Isaac, Madisyn, Jon, Haelee, Maciey, Katie, Wyatt, Brooklyn, Caleb, Wyatt; many sisters and brothers in marriage, and many nieces and nephews.
He was a tremendous husband, father, step-father, brother, mentor and friend. His love of the lord and life was infectious. He had a true servant’s heart. His life and legacy was of loving and working hard, always putting others first, and of giving of himself to better those around him.
A celebration of life will be held at Stone Church in Yakima at 2PM on Tuesday February 21, 2023. Any donations, flowers or remembrances for Phil, Hope and family can be sent to Stone Church – 3303 Englewood Ave, Yakima, WA 98902.
