

Raymond “Ray” Shuel passed away peacefully at Fieldstone Memory Care Friday October 20, 2023, at the age of 85. He was born March 4th, 1938 in Wray, Colorado to Willard and Lucille Shuel, being the youngest son of four boys. Ray moved to Yakima, WA traveling by train in 1942 at the age of 4 leaving behind their Dog Buster. He attended Broadway School through the 8th grade then started a paper route where he would ride his bike to deliver and collect payments. Ray also worked at Buck’s Wholesale Meats and in 1958 he founded Ray’s Retail Meats and further expanded into Ray’s Wholesale Meats.
Ray met the love of his life Dolores Edwards at Granny’s Kitchen next door to Ray’s Retail Meats and married in October of 1965. Through the years they spent time with their children and other family members vacationing at Ocean Shores to go clam digging as well as traveling to Hawaii. Ray also looked forward to his fishing trips to Alaska and Canada with his brothers and friends.
Ray and Dolores worked together at their business until they retired in 2007 selling their business to their son Bryan (Tracie). Ray also spent many of his retirement years at the Casino or playing cards with his friends. Multiple times a week he would meet with his brothers along with some friends for breakfast at Old Town Station rolling the dice to see who’s turn it was to pay.
Ray is survived by his three children: Bill Shuel, Bryan (Tracie) Shuel and daughter Kara (Jeff) Ashbaugh all of Yakima. Seven grandchildren: Nikki Smidt, Hailey, Taylor, Carlie and Katie Shuel, Breanna (Logan) Worsham and Brently (Kelli) Ashbaugh. He has seven great grandchildren: Lennex, Dezmond, Leland, Carson, Wesley, Riley, and Ellie. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law: Yvonne Shuel, Darlene Shuel and Kathy Edwards, Brother-in-law: Ervin Sperle as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dolores Shuel, and three brothers: Donald Shuel, William Shuel Sr., and John “Jack” Shuel.
Service will be held Saturday November 4th, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Wiley Union Church. The family would like to thank all his caretakers over the years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wiley Union Church, The Humane Society or Memorial Hospice.
