Born on July 31, 1939, in Berlin, Germany, Renate's life was a testament to resilience, love, and unwavering devotion to family, friends and community.
Renate began working at the young age of 15. Over the decades, she built a steady career as a clerk - a role she held with dedication until her retirement at age 62. Retirement brought her great joy as it allowed her to fully immerse herself in the things she loved most: tending to her garden filled with vibrant plants and flowers, caring for animals, and cooking meals that brought comfort and warmth to those around her.
Raised in Germany, Renate met and married an American soldier and bravely moved to the United States in 1957. Determined to build a new life in a new country, she taught herself to read and write in English - a reflection of her strength and determination.
Renate’s ability to connect with people was remarkable - she never met a stranger. Whether shopping or simply out for a walk, she had a magnetic presence that drew people to her effortlessly.
A devout Catholic throughout her life, Renate's faith was a guiding light through every chapter. Her unwavering belief provided strength during times of transition and challenge- especially during the 18 years she spent as the devoted wife of a career soldier. Through numerous relocations across countries and continents, Renate created a loving home wherever life took her family. Her ability to bring warmth and stability amidst frequent change was a testament to her enduring spirit.
She adored children and animals, always offering kindness and love without hesitation. Her great sense of humor lit up every room she entered, making others feel at ease with laughter that came easily around her. A great listener with an open heart, Renate was always willing to lend an ear or offer gentle wisdom when needed most.
Renate was the loving mother of three children: Jenny (Frank) Thom of North Carolina; Steve Hodge (Kelly) of Yakima; and Diane, who preceded her in death. She cherished her role as grandmother to Dan, Erik, and Matt - each of whom always held a very special place in her heart - and she was overjoyed when she became a great-grandmother to Michael, who serves proudly in the U.S. Navy.
She is also survived by her sisters Karin of Rohnert Park, California; Christa of San Antonio, Texas; and brother Manfred in Germany. Her extended family includes numerous nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly.
She was predeceased by her parents Wilhelm and Gertrude; brother Gert; sister-in-law Anita; brother-in-law Bennie; nephew Andreas; and Diane.
Renate's legacy lives on in the gardens she nurtured, the meals she lovingly prepared, and the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known her.
May her memory bring comfort and peace to all who mourn her passing.
