his side, after a hard fought battle with cancer. Vance was born to Thelma Critcher and
Robert Bond in the year 1928 in Blowing Rock North Carolina.
Vance has been a Washington resident for 80 years moving to Washington as a child. He
lived in the Chinook Pass area, attending Naches School until he graduated in 1949.
After graduation Vance moved to Seattle where he met and married the love of his life,
Viola Bannister, in 195Q. He and Viola then started a dry wall business and a family of
four children. In 1963 Vance sold his business and he and his family moved back to the
Chinook Pass area. Vance then started his construction business which continued
throughout his life. He enjoyed teaching his craft to his sons which they in turn passed
down to his grandsons. Vance always had a strong commitment to his community, he
helped build the Nile Clifdell Volunteer Fire Department and served the department for
17 years, 12 of those as chief. As time went on Vance and Viola bought a little vacation
home in Yuma Arizona, where they spent their winters on the golf course.
Vance loved any and all outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, hiking, boating,
snowmobiling, gardening, and later in life became an avid golfer and woodworker. The
grandchildren always looked forward to the special wooden treasures grandpa (Papa)
crafted for them each Christmas. They will cherish these through time.
Vance never believed in idle moments, to him life was to be lived and enjoyed in both
work and play and he never missed a moment of it. His family and friends will always
remember him as a good, kind, strong, man.
