Sidney was born in Centerville Arkansas on April 29th, 1939 and moved to Sacramento California in his early teens. He is the second oldest of seven children with three sisters, being the oldest son with three brothers. He is survived by his youngest sister Lela Katheryn McDonald. He also is survived by two children Teresa Fiedler and Steve (Julie) Dobbs. Grandchildren Ryan (Katie) Fiedler, Matt (Brittney) Fiedler, Colton (Krystle) Fiedler, Skyler Dobbs, & Alexa Dobbs, and seven great grandchildren. He also has a deceased son, Brian Carter. His wife of 60 years, Jeanette Dobbs, passed in November 2019.
He was admired by his siblings. Sidney, aka Sid, was known as a hard worker and leader of his family following the death of father when he was 17 years old. He quit school and worked multiple jobs to provide for his family. He quickly became a leader in the construction business as a Taper and also found work for many members of the family. He would not play favorites on the job and expected more out of his family. He was known as a great brother, but also hard driving boss! He helped hold the family together in those years. Even though he had limited schooling, he would always push his siblings to pursue an education, including having his youngest brother live with him so he would finish High School.
Sid courted Jeanette in 1960. He knew that she was the one, and she admired him for his playful nature and work ethic. He would often work construction projects out of town but he would drive back to see her so they could go dancing. It didn’t take long before they knew they wanted a lifetime commitment to each other and 4 months later they were married in Mexico. Sid was a consummate entrepreneur who would plan years ahead for the next possible project. He started his own construction business and moved his young family to Florida for several years and then also overseas for a few more. They would eventually settle in Washington State in 1978. Jeanette was always by his side on the job and at home. In fact, everyone in the house had a “job” and we all found ourselves working together on weekends and many holidays.
When his kids were growing up, his focus was on being the breadwinner. Growing up poor himself, he wanted a better life for his family. He worked very hard and had little time for engaging interactively with his kids. He praised his wife for being a wonderful mother and acknowledged the fact that if it wasn’t for her, his life would not be where it was today.
Sid’s focus and his heart gradually turned more toward family following the birth of his first grandchild. As the years went on and his family continued to grow so too did his outlook on life. Now when he came home from work, rather than spend all night on the phone for work, he would rather spend time with his Grandsons, including sneaking them the occasion treat. He also became an inspirational and supportive role model to Teresa’s young boys following the loss of their father. He would take them fishing and camping and even bought a boat for family activities together. He was also known to always have a sweet treat for any of the grandkids, cousins or friends.
He wanted to spend so much time with the grandkids he even bought a pair of rollerblades to skate with them, but soon realized the hard way that was a bad idea and gave them to Steve.
During many hard years running a drywall business in Yakima he was always planning their retirement. Over a several year period he purchased properties to eventually sell. He and Jeanette retired in 1998.
During early retirement they enjoyed traveling around the country in their 5th wheel trailer, often visiting family and friends. They also spent more time involved in their church and were sealed together in the Church of Latter-Day Saints Temple. They ultimately settled their travels for many years in Arizona where they made numerous friends and kept very active. Steve fondly remembers many phone calls that would get cut short because they had to run off to another card game. Sid also took over most of the chores such as cooking and washing dishes as payback for all the years previous that Jeanette did these chores.
Sid, once again the planner, knew that they would eventually desire a more permanent setting so he purchased a place in Yakima and rented it out until they returned in late 2015. Sid’s youngest sister, Lela Katheryn, joined them in 2017 to help in their later retirement years.
Sid was a devoted Husband, Father and Grandfather and made great sacrifices for his family. All he wanted was for his children and grandchildren to be successful and happy. He will be missed by so many and is now in heaven with Jeanette and other family members. We truly believe he will continue to watch over all of us and he will remain in the hearts. Rest in peace Dad and give Mom a hug for us.
We love you!
