He was born in Bend, Oregon on September 28, 1935 to Robert and Gertrude Smith. Bill moved with his family to Portland, Oregon as a young boy, where he spent his formative and young adult years. He attended Laurelhurst Elementary and graduated from Washington High School in 1953. After attending the University of Oregon for 2 years, Bill joined the Army, where he earned the rank of lieutenant while serving 3 years in Japan and Korea. Shortly after his return from the military, he met his one and only, Helen Jean Jones. Five months later, on August 30, 1959, they were married and began a journey together that would last 49 years until Helen’s death in 2009.
Bill is survived by his sister, Marilyn Harms (husband, Norman Harms, Lt. Col. U.S. Army – Ret.); 3 children, Stacey Smith, Bill Jr. (wife Danielle), and Darcy Dugger; as well as 6 grandchildren, Holland Dugger, Hunter Smith, Matthew Maglietti, Gracie Smith, Nicholas Russell, and Evan Maglietti.
Bill provided for his family abundantly, utilizing a variety of career paths, primarily sales and sales management; he even owned a local pub. Ten minutes early, always put together, direct, and sincere, are qualities he possessed that made him successful in all his professional endeavors.
In his personal life, Bill was an avid golfer, baseball fan, and proud supporter of all his family’s many activities. The name “William” has many meanings, one of which is “Faithful Guardian”. There is no better way to describe our father. Faithful in every aspect of his life, and an unflinching guardian to all those he loved. He used a gruff persona to conceal his true spirit of generosity and his soft heart. Babies and animals were never fooled by his prickly exterior; they were perpetually drawn to him.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at 12:30 p.m. at Keith & Keith Funeral Home. Afterward, Bill and Helen will be reunited for their anniversary with a Graveside Inurnment at West Hills Memorial Park.
