     Dad & I never really saw eye-to-eye on things, but I do know a couple of things for sure. He loved the Navy and was a career patriot (I myself am happiest on or near water...).He loved to travel and was adventurous (I get that from him...). He could talk to ANYONE...and usually did. He drank too much coffee and lost stuff all the time. But he tried, in his own way, to please everybody even though it was an impossible task. There WERE good times... the Bali Hai, family trips (like Phantom, Canada, Disneyland) , family cruises on Destroyers & Aircraft Carriers, postcards from all over, moments of the right thing at the right time. Things that made up for the disjointed life of here for months, gone for months, and the war between Home and Military life. I think Dad was happiest out at sea, where possibilities were endless and he could make his own rules, though he did love all of us in his own way...he was just meant to be where he is now, sailing, sailing, sailing...
    So I'm sending a postcard to you this time, Dad...

I first met Bill and Darlene when my husband, Eddie, began driving for Hertz. Bill and Darlene worked airport security and were fellow shuttle drivers for Hertz car rentals and sales.

When I became a driver, Bill was very kind and helpful.  He was always willing to drive the cars others didn't really want to.

Some of the first things I would always notice were his pipe and offee cup.  They were never empty! Because of this, we got to know where all the rest stops were on our trips. Also, Bill could sleep in such small spaces in our chase car. He crawlwed into the cramped spaces and curled up to take a nap.

You didn't have to be around Bill long before you found out how kind and thoughtful he was to people, especially older people.  He and Darlene took care of an older friend and uncle. Many times they gave up drives just to take care of them.  Once when my mother was visiting from Okla. she had to quickly return home to attend her sister's funeral.  Mother was not a good traveler and was really upset by having to go through a special TSA inspection. She became anxious that they couldn't get everything back in her bags. Luckily, Bill was the inspector.  He quickly reassured her that he could do it. After she was passed through into the waiting room, Bill would go check on her and keep her cheered-up. We thought this was just a great example of how he cared for people.

He was a nice person to work and travel with. When we would stop for meals he loved to eat, especially liver and onions!

He always had a good word for you and a smile. That's how I remember him.

I remember Bill in many ways, mostly related to Hertz drives we made together. He was always so nice and willing to help anyway he could. When several of us were going in a chase car, it could get quite crowded. He would get in the back and curl up on the floor and take a nap.  he could fit in such a small space it amazed all of us.  

Several times he turned down a Hertz drive because he was helping someone who needed help.  That' the kind of man he was.

Dear Darlene and family -- We, at the Navy Memorial in Washington, DC, are so sorry for your loss and of course one of our longtime shipmates and Plank Owners.  I personally feel that I knew him through his Navy Log that I manage, and I am honored to have his beautiful Navy Log forever. I FIRST MET BILL IN 2009 WHILE HAVING HIS CAR WORKED ON AT YVCC. I REALLY ENJOYED TALKING TO HIM ABOUT HIS PAST SERVICE DUTY AND SOME MUTUAL FRIENDS. HE WAS ONE OF THE FINEST MEN I HAVE EVER HAD THE PLEASURE TO KNOW.

Bill will always have a place in my heart in the spot reserved for close friends.

 II'll never forget how Bill always had a cup of coffee with hin no matter what he was doing, helping my Father.  Bill and Darlene were always doing things together.  I'll never forget how Bill would play around wigh Fluffer (my Dad's dog)  I had never seen anyone p0lay like that!  I thought I was seeing things the first time he did it.  Almost every night or two Bill and Darlene would come and visit my Dad even if it was for a short time.  They would take the time to sit down and listen to whatever he wanted to talk about.  Dartlene and Bill  were such a comforrt to me knowing that my Father had such good fiends.  I considered them the best of friends also, they showed me so much love and kindness.  Bill and Darlene were a big help0 doing all my Father's paperwork.  And they would go to the care center and bring him treats and anything that he had need of.  Even though they were very busy.  It hurts me to know 
bill suffered so much.  God has taken away the pain now.  Bill will be waiting for Darlene in Heaven with Jesus.  No matter how long it may be, only God knows that.  My heart aches for losing such a good friend.  I pray for Darlene, I know this is so hard for her after 42 years of marriage. We have known Bill & Darlene since they moved to Yakima in 1990.  I met them at the Yakima Airport while they were working Security.  We bacame good friends.  When Bill was the Manager for Oylmpic Security he was short handed & he hired my wife Lavilla Joanne.  My best Memories of Bill is when we were talking 1 on 1--about news of the day, work, Family, Military, planes, & Baseball...  He always was smoking his pipe outside on break & yes, he did carry around that coffee cup.  Over the years we would see the both of them shopping or at the Yakima Bears Games in the Summer.  Bill is a good man.  He loved his Wife, Family, true Friends, & Country.  He was a Proud Navy Man & loved what he did.  Darlene was a True Navy Wife..and supported Bill the whole way.  He will be missed by all.  We feel for Darlene, as they were in love with each other very much & they haven't been apart in last 20 years.   GOD Speed my Friend!!!  We love you both very much... I knew Bill for several years and always considered him to be one of my rare friends that would always be there when I needed some one to talk to or to give me a hand with something. Bill was a laid back, serious, good humored and sincere human being, that was totally in love with and devoted to his loving wife Darlene, she was always the utmost important subject on Bills mind when there was a discussion of some future plans. I'm really going to miss Bill, but he is probably much better off now and not feeling any pain. May God Bless and support Bill's family in this their time of sorrow, and give them the strength to move on.

 We didn't get to see Billy Roy very much after he joined the NAVY, but he was always in our hearts & thoughts & prayers. I'm so very ,very grateful that we got to see him again ,after so many years absence. He got to attend a family reunion a few years ago & we talked about our childhood & all that had passed . I first met Bill and Darlene when we were neighbors and I needed help. Isn't that just typical? Bill was always "johnny on the spot" when it came to lending a hand, or doing what needed to be done! They were such wonderful neighbors and easy people to be around, I stayed in touch with them after I moved away from that neighborhood. Bill always had an idea what to do about any problem that should come up, and he didn't just have the idea, he was always "ready to go" to get it done, too! Such a eager and gentle spirit, you just could not help but love him. He will be truly missed! My thoughts and prayers go out now to Darlene and the entire family as they grieve the loss their beloved. It is my sincere desire to be the same source of support to Darlene as they have been to me. I will endeavor to live up to that high standard of trust and dependability that Bill demonstrated for us.

We have lost another one of our many hero's. William Roy Vogel has always been Billy Roy. My nephew for 63 years. We were always pretty close. He moved away many miles,but, our love reached across the miles.My love goes out to Darlene and family.

I met Bill while working at the Yakima Airport, back when Westair used to fly out.  I loved working with him and Darlene, they were great company, and they were always there to listen to me and give great advise. They were also one of the fews people that kept in touch with me when I moved away 14 years ago, and I have missed them both very much since. All my prayers go out to Darlene and Bill will be sorely missed by all.

I didn't see Bill (or Billy Roy as much of the family called him) for many years but still thought of him fondly.  God Bless everyone in his family.  Love, from cousin Rhonda.

I got to know Bill while I worked at Horizon Air in Yakima.  He was always working security when I worked. It was always fun to just stop by security a little early so I could chat with Bill and Darlene.  He was a very sweet man and interesting to chat with.  He will be missed.

Bill was a very good friend. He was true American, He served our country with pride and honor. He would go out of His way to help anyone. He believed that in when you gave Your word to someone, you were bound by honor to stand behind it. He was fearless when it come to standing for what right and just. He was a kind and giving man. He didn't demand respect, He earned it by showing you respect. I grew to be a better man, from knowing Bill. We shared our thoughts and life experiences.I never got bored or tired of His stories about His years in the Navy. I  truly miss Bill. He was a true PATRIOT.  A GOOD FRIEND. Bill our neighbor and friend,Bill one special person. always helping his neighbors with their lawns  and anything he knew it needed to be done,and knew they needed help with,when ever my son or me visit Bill and Darlene we never came home empty handed Bill will always find something for us to take home,especially ice cream and icee for my boy alex always   thinking about the children, we will miss him forever.mendoza family.

Bill was the best of best friends.  Bills memories will live with me forever and one day we will get to share memories again.  I will love and miss my brother forever.

I had 42 wonderful, happy years with Bill in my life.  He was always my rock and my foundation.  He was always there for me when I needed a friend or a friendly smile.   He will always be in my heart though now my heart is feeling broken with his passing.  Still I have many, many memories to sustain me and I know he's in God's loving arms now with no more pain from the cancer and he's once again whole, happy and totally pain free.  I'll never stop loving him and I'll miss him dearly.  God truly blessed me when he introduced Bill into my life.
