Allan Whitman Johnson, age 73, of Cumberland Foreside, Maine, formerly of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, died on Monday, September 5th at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough, Maine. He passed peacefully surrounded by family.
Allan, or Al as he was known, was born on December 13, 1942 in Quincy, Massachusetts to Lillian Wright Johnson and Whitman Elwin Johnson. Raised in Quincy, he graduated from North Quincy High School in 1960 and the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1964. Al then began his career in the United States Army, retiring in 1969. While enlisted, he completed tours of duty in Germany, Vietnam, and the United States, earning the rank of Captain. A fellow of the Society of Actuaries, Al enjoyed a 26-year career at the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company in Springfield, Massachusetts, retiring in 1996.
Al and his wife Kathy married in 1967, settling in Wilbraham, Massachusetts where they raised their two daughters, and he was an active member of Saint Cecilia’s Church. Known affectionately as Dad, Bumpa and Big Al, he had many passions in his life. Al was an avid reader who loved crossword puzzles, and a diehard sports fan, supporting the Patriots, Red Sox, and Bruins. However, his true love was the game of golf, longing to play every day of the year. Al did achieve his dream of playing Pebble Beach in California, and golfed his way through England, Ireland, and Scotland with Kathy and their dear friends Sandi and Clyde Meyerhoefer.
Al was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and uncle, and he set an example for everyone who knew him of the importance of family, never missing a school event, sports game, or occasion in which his children and grandchildren were involved.
Al was predeceased in death by his father. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his daughters: Lynne (Johnson) Jones and her husband Carey of Brighton, Massachusetts, and Bonnie (Johnson) Barry and her husband Elliott of Yarmouth, Maine, as well as the apples of his eyes, his grandchildren Ella, Macie, and Edward, all of Yarmouth, Maine. He is also survived by his beloved mother Lillian of Hanson, Massachusetts, and his two sisters: Donna Kisbany and her husband Bill of Ormond Beach, Florida, and Susan Penney of Hanson, Massachusetts. In addition, he loved his three nephews, R Brandon Kearns of Ocoee, Florida, and Thomas and Joshua Penney of Hanson, Massachusetts, as well as his many cousins and numerous friends.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough for all of the care and respect they provided to Al these last seven months. He was truly loved there, and while they quickly adopted him as a member of their family, they became a part of his as well.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Maine Veterans Home, 290 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough, Maine 04074.
