Barbara Hunter Penley passed away peacefully and with family members surrounding her. She was born in Benton, Maine as the first of 4 daughters to Sam and Dot Hunter. A close family her whole life. She attended Lawrence schools and even was honored in Who’s Who of American High School Students.
She attended the University of Farmington. She majored in Home Economics. She met
Joe Penley at Farmington, which led to a 62-year marriage.
After graduation, she briefly taught at Madison High School before moving onto Skowhegan Area Junior High. Her and Joe both taught at the school around the block from where they lived and raised a family (Brian and David). Just like in every aspect
of her life, long friendships were formed with many of her fellow teachers.
The Congregational church of Skowhegan was another group of longtime friends. From Christmas parties at the McCarthy’s, surprise 50th birthday parties, to just Saturday night games, or always ready with a coffee and snack to chat. Even moving to
Yarmouth she was a big part of “a group of condo ladies” who met and chatted daily.
Barbara participated in organizations and activities. She worked as an usher at the Lakewood Summer Theatre. Barbara was a lifelong member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.
Made a lot of items for church fairs. Food judge at the State Fair, or anything the boy, (or grandkids) needed sewn or cooked for.
Barbara was proud of her family, especially her two grandkids; Sam and Hunter Penley.
