Cumberland, ME- Doris C. Cook, 83, of Cumberland, passed away on October 13, 2023 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born in Lewiston, ME, on August 5, 1940, a daughter of Roland and Adrienne (Lefebvre) Houle. She was French-speaking and had to learn English upon entering school. Her intelligence became evident as she skipped a grade for being caught doing advanced math while doodling in class. She loved to tell that story. Doris graduated as salutatorian from Freeport High School and later graduated from Westbrook College. She had a long career as a lab technologist in the blood bank at Maine Medical Center for over 42 years. Her attention to detail was second to none.
Doris was loved by everyone who met her. She could talk to anyone, and she was so genuine and caring. She was also known for her fantastic wit and sense of humor. She was such a good sport- always going along with her daughter’s sometimes crazy ideas. Above all, she will be remembered for being the best Mom and Grammy ever. She shared a special bond with her granddaughter. We are so fortunate to have had her in our lives, and we have some amazing memories.
She was predeceased by her parents; a son, David MacKinnon and her husband, Olin MacKinnon. Despite enduring much tragedy and heartache in her lifetime, she remained the strongest person we have ever known.
Doris is survived by her loving family with whom she lived with the past 6 years: her daughter, Sherry Boothby, granddaughter Fiona, and son-in-law Scott Boothby. Also her cousin and close friend, Barbara Nason, and childhood friend, Charlene Menard. Her cat, Delilah, will be lovingly cared for by her family.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane in Yarmouth. To honor her love of animals, please consider donating to a local animal shelter in her memory.
