

Portland - Elizabeth F. Carlson, 83, of Cumberland died Sunday May 15, 2011 after a period of declining health. She was born in Jacksonville, VT on December 14, 1927, the daughter of Grace (Tarnowski) and Raymond Fowler. She and her younger brother, Charles, grew up “on top of the hill on Fowler Road”. After graduating from high school she went to Boston and graduated from Fisher Business College.
Her first professional work experience was for Judge Chapman in Brattleboro, VT and it was in Brattleboro that she met and married Robert Carlson. From there the couple moved to Wakefield, MA and Betty was the Executive Secretary at Evans Shoes. When the family moved to Maine, Betty obtained her real estate license and worked for Peterson Realty.
Betty was a Life Member of the Winnegance Order of the Eastern Star; a Life Member of the State of Maine and National Republican Party and served as Past President of the Portland Women’s Republican Club. Betty was proud to be a Republican. She was also a member of the Cumberland Garden Club.
Betty enjoyed playing board games, antiques, drawing, hooking rugs and reading. She also enjoyed playing Beano with friends and being part of “The Breakfast Club” at the Yarmouth McDonald’s. Betty was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother who loved her family dearly and with great interest.
Betty is survived by her husband Robert of Cumberland; her son Steven of Bend, OR and his daughter Rebecca of Washington, DC; her son Marc of Bowdoinham, ME and his daughter Shauna of Winthrop, ME; two nieces and one nephew. She was predeceased by her brother Charles.
