

Windham - Elizabeth Rand Surgi, 85, of Cumberland Center, died on 9/3/2010 in Windham at Ledgewood Manor. Betty suffered with Alzheimer’s but passed peacefully to her eternal rest after a short period of respiratory complications.
Born 7/31/1925 in Rumford, the second daughter of Ernest Abbott Rand and Carolyn Huston Rand, she called Cumberland her home, attending local schools (Greely 1943), but lived in the New Orleans area while married (to William F. Surgi) where she was active in local Mardi Gras Krewes.
Returning to Cumberland in 1960, she became a respected Secretary in the Portland School System, receiving the “Superintendent’s Award” in 1984. Betty was also active in the Prince Memorial Library, DAR, the Cumberland Historical Society, and the Congregational Church. Hobbies included knitting, golf, and bridge.
She is survived by son Rand and his wife Kathy, of Cumberland; son Alan, of Lompoc, CA; and sister, Jane Pendelton, of Lunenburg, MA.
A 2:00PM funeral service on Wednesday 9/8/10 at the Cumberland Congregational Church, 282 Main Street, Cumberland, ME is planned, with a reception following at the church hall.
