Freeport – Elmer “Sonny” Scherer Williams, Jr., 81, died Thursday December 18, 2014 with his family by his side, after a four year battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born in Freeport on October 4, 1933, a son of Eva (Thompson) and Elmer S. Williams, Sr. Sonny was drafted into the US Army in June 1950 and was part of the Army Airborne Division serving in Japan.
After his discharge in 1955 he returned home and worked at Freeport Shoe where he met his soon to be wife, Pauline Vera Coffin. They married in 1957. Together they built numerous homes in Freeport and finally settled on Marquis Road in 1976. Sonny was a talented mason and carpenter and his craftsmanship was easily seen when you entered his home. He could build anything.
In 1993, he and Pauline spent their time on Keg Lake building their first log home. Keg Lake soon became a place he enjoyed spending time with his wife and extended family. Sonny enjoyed taking his grandsons hunting and fishing up on the lake and at home on Marquis Road.
Sonny is survived by his son Andrew T. Williams and his wife Meredith and his two grandsons: Sawyer A. Williams and Austin T. Williams, all of Freeport; his sister, Sharon Brennan of Freeport; his sister, Donna Lapierre of Durham; his brother, Norman Williams of Freeport; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Pauline, in 2010; his son, Stephen P. Williams, in 1994; and most recently his furry companion and buddy who kept him going, “Mika”, in November.
Sonny will be remembered for his love of his family and his passion for cutting wood. After all, he had the longest wood pile on Marquis Road and possibly anywhere around. He will be missed by many.
A memorial service will be held on Monday December 29, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. Please visit www.lindquistfuneralhome.com to view a video collage of Sonny’s life and to share condolences, memories and tributes with his family.
