

Scarborough – Harold Jay Monroe, 84, of Cumberland, ME died on Thursday August 2, 2012 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. He was born on April 13, 1928 in Kingsport, TN, the son of Clara Catherine (Miller) and Harold Monroe. He was educated in Tenafly, NJ schools and played football and baseball on the High School team. During the Korean Conflict he served in the US Army Medical Corps at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, DC.
Dr. Monroe was a graduate of the University of Miami, FL, Columbia University, NY, and received his PhD in Psychology from the University of Denver, CO. He worked for the State of Maine for 32 years, first as a Staff Psychologist at The Maine State Hospital, Augusta and then as Assistant Superintendent of Pineland Hospital, New Gloucester. In addition to his career with the State of Maine he also taught Psychology part time at Bowdoin College, Bates College and the University of Southern Maine.
Jay enjoyed sports, was athletic himself, a good golf partner and was a lifelong fan of the NY Giants. He was a man of great intellect and enjoyed reading various genres and authors. Most outstanding was Jay’s kindness.
Jay is survived by his two sons: Matthew Lee Monroe and his wife Nancy of Exeter, NH and Gerald Glen Monroe and his wife Sharon of Concord, NH; his former wife and friend, Joan Monroe of Durham, ME; his sister Marilyn Amodeo and her husband Jim of Virginia, his grandchildren Andrew Monroe of Jacksonville, FL, Jason Monroe of Exeter, NH and Christopher and Catherine Monroe of Concord, NH and as well as a large circle of friends.
Visiting hours will be on Sunday evening from 5 – 7 PM August 5, 2012 at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth with a funeral service at the funeral home on Monday at 1:00 PM with Rev. Philip Shearman officiating. Burial will follow in Moss Side Cemetery, 335 Main Street, Cumberland, ME.
