Cumberland - Jean Leighton Doane, 74, a long time resident of Tuttle Road in Cumberland passed away quietly in her home on Sunday, June 26, 2011. She was surrounded by her loving family and care givers and left this world comfortably and at peace. Jean was predeceased by her parents, Philip G. and Marjorie W. (Smith) Leighton of Walnut Hill, North Yarmouth.
Jean was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother who took particular delight in her grandchildren, Zachary and Max. Her passions in life included family, which led in turn to a deep interest in genealogy and many 100’s of hours with cousin Linda Laibinis working on their family tree, and Boston sports, particularly the Celtics and Red Sox . After retirement she developed a passion for E-bay and its associated on-line community. This passion resulted in countless weekend buying expeditions to local yard and book sales, many of which left her family scratching their heads at the acquisitions. As “mainelady” she was a respected and valued voice of reason in her favorite ebay chat board and formed many lasting friendships.
Jean was born in Yarmouth and was valedictorian of Greely Institute’s class of 1954. At Bates College she was elected Phi Beta Kappa and graduated with High Honors in1958. After graduation Jean worked for several years for Union Mutual before becoming a stay at home mom. She initially resumed her career by working in the Cumberland/North Yarmouth Schools as a teacher’s assistant and substitute. In 1977 she began work with Maine National Bank, progressing through various positions and ultimately becoming a Private Banking Officer. Her professional life concluded with her 1998 retirement from Key Bank where she served as a Vice President of Private Banking.
Jean is survived by her husband of 52 years, Richard Wyman Doane, her son Jeff of Lyman South Carolina, her son Rick and his wife Hilary of Cumberland, her sister Judy Maddox and her husband Dick of North Yarmouth, her sister Peggi Eleger and husband Danny of Travis City, Michigan, Cousin Grey Leighton of Brewer, Maine, 2 grandchildren and step grandchild Megan Tarling.
