Jeannie was born on September 7, 1941, in New Rochelle, New York, to Durando and June Miller. She graduated from Pelham High School and Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York.
Jeannie carried throughout her life a rare combination of deep love, authentic generosity, and genuine curiosity about others, paired with a vivacity that made her unforgettable. Her mother once described her as a “spirited little filly,” a phrase that remained fitting throughout her life.
More than anything, Jeannie was devoted to her family. Shortly after college, she married Bill Lackey, and together they built a home in Bedford, New York, where they raised their sons, Dave and Tim. The family later moved to Cumberland Foreside, Maine, where their daughter, Amanda, was born.
After her first marriage ended, Jeannie found her soulmate, Bill Hubbell, with whom she shared more than 25 years of a loving marriage.
Jeannie had a lifelong love of sailing, first nurtured on Long Island Sound with her parents and brother, Dee. She passed this love on to her own family during cherished summers sailing along the Maine coast.
She was a devoted and extraordinary mother, pouring love, wisdom, and care not only into her family and her beloved dogs, but also into everyone she encountered—from close friends and neighbors to the many people she greeted in everyday places around town.
Jeannie had a deep love of words, books, and learning. Family dinners often included lively conversations supported by well-worn reference books kept close at hand, fostering curiosity and discovery in her children and grandchildren. She was a master of Scrabble, loved crossword puzzles, and instilled in her family a lifelong love of reading.
She shared her warmth professionally teaching literacy and math in the Cumberland, Maine school system and later as Director of Parish Life at Foreside Community Church in Falmouth, Maine. She was known for going the extra mile—through a thoughtful note, a home-cooked meal, or a listening ear.
Jeannie was predeceased by her parents; her husband, William Bradford Hubbell; her son, W. Davis “Dave” Lackey; and her brother, Durando “Dee” Miller.
She is survived by her son, Timothy Lackey (Heidi Ellingwood Lackey); her daughter, Amanda Lackey Murray (Robert Murray); her granddaughters, Eliza and Hannah Cote; her step-grandchildren, Vivian and Jonah Murray; her stepdaughter, Drika Hubbell Costantino (Anthony); and her stepson, J. Bradford “Brad” Hubbell (Suzanne Daily) and their children, Zack Hubbell, Alix Hubbell, and Corinne Daily.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Foreside Community Church in Falmouth, Maine.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jeannie’s memory to Dirigo Reads (www.dirigoreads.org), supporting access to books for children across Maine.
