Yarmouth, ME- Joan Mary Curran, 91, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2023, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. She was born in Augusta, ME, on May 24, 1932, a daughter of George and Zilphy (Kinch) Martin.
Joan graduated from Cony High School in Augusta and from Mercy School of Nursing in 1953 where she received her RN. She continued to work as a RN at Mercy Hospital. Wanting to continue her education, she attended and graduated with Honors with a Bachelor of Science in psychology all while raising five children and working full time nights. She worked at Mercy Hospital through most of her nursing career. She left Mercy for about 4 years and worked at Osteopathic Hospital in Portland, ME but quickly returned to Mercy Hospital, as that is where her heart was. Returning to Mercy Hospital, she was Charge Nurse on the 11-7 shift. Because of her love for the night shift, the doctors, and fellow nurses, she continued to work in SCU but did transfer to 3B and work nights until she retired at the age of 70. Her greatest joy in life was raising her children and grandchildren. She loved having picnics at Two Lights State Park, Sebago Lake, Kiwanis Beach, always with a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken, (she loved it more than the kids). She would rent a camp every summer so the whole family could get together. When she retired, she spent a lot of time by her pool where she enjoyed reading and having long conversations with whoever stopped by that day. For a few years, she would spend winters in Florida with her daughter Kathy and returned for the summers. In the wintertime, she would knit for hours making sure all the kids had warm mittens and hats, sweaters and afghans. One year, she won a Blue Ribbon for her excellent knitting. Nonnie loved writing her own poetry. She was an accomplished pianist. She played at many weddings and played the organ at church for years. You could always find her watching her favorite TV show, Law and Order. She would often say she was a self-proclaimed lawyer.
She was pre-deceased by her parents; her oldest son, Timothy Curran; granddaughter, Kelley Cole and grandson William Johnson.
Joan is survived by her loving children, Michaelene Thompson (husband Keith), Kathleen Dudley, Maureen Falcone (husband Danny), Tiger Curran, daughter in law Melinda Curran; grandchildren, Daniel Cole (wife Amanda),Leigh Anne Fortin(husband Rick),Patrick Curran (wife Kendra), Matthew Dalton ( wife Teresa),Shaun Curran (wife Marisa), Leon Johnson, Kalen Curran, Kathleen Works (husband Ryan); great grandchildren, Calvin, Kasen, Colton, Kamdyn, Gloria, Duke, Dustin, Derek, Kylie, Brycen, Zilphy, Keegan, Nolan, Ryan; great-great grandchild, Emerson.
