Mary Elizabeth Hurd, 92, formerly of Freeport, died peacefully with her family by her side on Saturday, July 2, 2016, at her home at Cadigan Lodge, the Highlands, Topsham, Maine. She was born on May 6, 1924, at home in Winslow, Maine, the daughter of Daniel and Mildred (Smiley) Wing. She grew up in Winslow, and during the depression helped her mother care for children from the Maine Children’s Home for Little Wanderers.
She attended Winslow schools, and after graduation from Winslow High School took a job at the telephone company before enlisting in the Navy during World War II. She was a Pharmacist’s Mate stationed in San Diego. When the war ended she returned to Maine and, on May 27, 1945, married Lester M. Hurd. They spent most of their married life in Freeport, where they raised their four boys. She worked for the Freeport school system while her boys were growing up.
Mary was an active member of the Freeport Congregational Church for over 50 years. She was known for her lovely handiwork and created everything from braided rugs to hats and mittens, crocheted wall hangings and most recently blankets to be sent overseas. She had a great love of music. She played the piano and organ and enjoyed hymns and old time tunes. Blessed with a beautiful voice, she loved to sing along as she played. Her greatest love was her family, and she looked forward to family parties and visits from her children and their families.
She is survived by two of her sons, Christopher and his wife Kathy of Bryant Pond, and David and his wife Mary of Freeport, daughters-in-law Suzanne of Boothbay Harbor and Donna of Lewisville, North Carolina, and her brother Daniel and his wife Sandra of Winslow. She is also survived by her six beloved grandchildren, Mark of Boothbay, Paul of Fairfax Station, Virginia, Nathan of Lisbon Falls, Brenda of West Paris, Matthew of Van Nuys, CA, and Rebecca of Freeport, as well as seven great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Lester, in 1991, sister Shirley, sons Timothy and Peter, and granddaughter Elizabeth.
