Yarmouth- Mary “Kay” Catherine Whitney, 86, formerly of South Portland, died peacefully Tuesday August 4th. She was born in Portland the daughter of William & Mary Sinclair the youngest of four children. She graduated as Salutatorian at Cathedral High School in Portland. Then she continued her education at Mercy School of Nursing and graduated as a Registered Nurse.
During the World War II she was very proud to have served as an American Red Cross Nurse. She also worked as an RN at Mercy Hospital and other institutions in and around Portland during her career as a nurse.
Kay, as her family and friends called her, was married to Raymond R. Whitney for 41 years. They lived in Portland & South Portland during the first years of their marriage, then Falmouth Foreside for 20 years where they raised their two sons. They moved to Kennebunkport for 14 years and finally to Biddeford until Ray died in 1994. Kay moved to Scarborough, then Portland and South Portland before her final move to Yarmouth.
She is survived by her eldest son Mark and his wife Caryn Dryfuss of Oquossic, as well as her son Christopher and his wife Brenda and their son Tucker, of Yarmouth.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, 326 Main Street in Yarmouth on Thursday August 12th at 10am. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
