PORTLAND – Mildred (Casey) Deveau, 90, of Portland, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2012, at The Cedars, where she was a resident for over 3 years. Mildred was born in Boston, MA on February 1, 1922, the daughter of the late Herbert and Cecelia Casey.
She married John Deveau on September 25, 1943 in Dorchester, MA. Mildred and John resided in Tewksbury and North Andover, MA for 25 years before moving to Yarmouth, ME in 1986.
She was a wonderful kindergarten teacher at Millbrook Country Day School in Wilmington, MA, and later at St. Charles School in Woburn, MA. She always loved children and they loved her.
Mildred was a member of the Yarmouth Women’s Club for many years. She also served on the Board at Royal Mariner Estates in Yarmouth, where she and John lived before moving to Birchwoods at Canco Assisted Living in Portland several years ago.
Wherever she lived, Mildred formed close personal connections. Neighbors became friends and Mildred stayed in touch. She loved Maine and for many years she and John would spend a summer week somewhere along the coast. Mildred was an avid reader and also enjoyed raising African violets, which graced her windowsills wherever she lived. She delighted in her grandchildren and, later, her great-grandchildren. Last February, relatives of four generations helped her celebrate 90 years.
Mildred is survived by her husband, John, of Portland; son Kenneth and his wife Cheryl of Hull, MA; daughter Stephanie and her partner Monica Fischbach of Gray, ME; brother Herbert (Buddy) Casey of Worcester, MA; grandchildren Derek of Windham, NH, Deryl of Fort Drum, NY, Denis of Manchester, NH and Renee of Londonderry, NH; as well as six great-grandchildren. Mildred was predeceased by her brother William Casey and her sister Catherine “Kay” Coyle.
The family would like to thank the staff of Cedars for the excellent care and support Mildred received over the past several years. In recent months, Hospice of Southern Maine also provided much appreciated one-on-one attention. Despite growing weakness, Mildred continued to respond with friendliness and warmth to all.
Visiting hours will be on Thursday August 30, 2012 from 6 – 8 PM at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, ME. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday August 31 at 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Church, 326 Main Street, Yarmouth, ME. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will be later that afternoon in Holy Cross Cemetery, 76 Smith Street, Yarmouth.
