

Falmouth - Paulina “Polly” Logan, 87, died on Wednesday May 30, 2012 at Falmouth By The Sea after a four month journey with cancer. She died as she lived, with courage, strength and unwavering faith. She was born in Portland, ME on February 9, 1925 a daughter of Thomas F Hollivan and Paulina K Kirsch.
Polly attended Kavanaugh Grammar School and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1943. As a student at St Joseph’s College she joined the Cadet Nurses Corp at Mercy Hospital. She then went on to Shaw’s Business College and after graduating, worked at Mercy Hospital as an admitting clerk for six years.
She was also a secretary for several years at R.E. Cleaves Lumber Co, James Wiltsie Company and Houghton Arnold Machine Company where she met Robert Logan. They were married in 1959. After marrying Robert, they moved to Bangor, then on to Cumberland where they lived for 44 years, bringing up five children.
Polly and Bobby started their own business, The Village Smithy, a gift shop which later became Logan’s Auction Sales and Logan’s Furniture Refinishing. They bought, sold and repaired antiques for many years. Polly was bookkeeper at their antique auctions. She was the resident chair caning expert.
Polly was a member of the Cumberland Historical Society, Cumberland County Extension Service and the Garden Club. An accomplished quilter, she contributed the square of the Cumberland Fair for the Historical Society quilt which is on display at the Society. Polly did stenciling, made pierced lampshades, created jewelry from the sea and loved their trips to Williamsburg and beyond. She also put up vegetables from their large gardens and loved to cook. She was well known for her chocolate cakes made from scratch.
She was an avid history buff and was especially drawn to history of the Civil War. She also enjoyed genealogy. When her children were young, she took them to historic places like Longfellow’s home and The Tate House to teach them about history.
Polly was a dedicated member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yarmouth, where after her hip surgeries; she always sat in the back row with her friends Helen and Alice.

Ford for his pastoral care. We also send a huge thank you to Hospice of Southern Maine for the caring people who helped Polly and her family through this difficult time. We would also like to recognize the special lifelong love and care extended to both Polly and Bobby from Nick and Betsy Nickerson.
She is survived by her five children, Jane Peterson and her husband Pete of Portland, Julie Logan and her companion Gary Ouellette of Brunswick, Steven Logan and his wife Beth of North Yarmouth, Patricia Leeman and her husband Mark of North Yarmouth, Thomas Logan and his wife Christine of Windham, and grandchildren Michael and Justin Leeman, Matthew Logan, Madisyn and Joshua Logan. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert, who died on September 16, 2010.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday June 6, 2012 at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 326 Main Street, Yarmouth. Burial will follow in West Cumberland Cemetery, Blackstrap Road, Cumberland.
