

Former Army Nurse
North Yarmouth – Pauline R. Young, 96, a homemaker and veteran of two wars, died peacefully on March 18, 2015 after a short illness. She served in England, North Africa and Italy for three years in WWII as a Nurse Anesthetist. During the Korean War she served in a M.A.S.H. unit for two years where she earned the Meritorious Service Medal, as well as many other commendations and medals. She rose to the rank of Captain and was awaiting her Majority when she retired.
Born in Lawrence, Mass., the daughter of William A. and Nora Zarzour, she attended Lawrence High School and St. John’s Hospital School of Nursing in Lowell, Mass. She entered the Army prior to WWII in 1941 and was one of the first nurses to go overseas when war was declared. Because of her Lebanese heritage and her knowledge of Arabic, she also served as an interpreter in North Africa for the Armed Forces. She served in many U.S. posts including one tour at Walter Reed Army Hospital in preparation for her duty as an Operating Room Supervisor.
She was married in 1954 to Lt. Robert L. Young, US Army, and accompanied him on various assignments including a three year tour in Germany where their two children were born. She enjoyed many crafts such as crocheting, crewel and needlepoint for which she won blue ribbons at the local fair. She also loved to cook Arabic food and share it with family and friends.
She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Yarmouth and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
She is survived by her son Bill Young and his wife Lynn and their daughters, Laura and Leah of North Yarmouth; and daughter Robin Young of North Yarmouth. She was predeceased by her husband, Lt. Col. Robert L. Young, in 2007.
Visiting hours will be on Thursday March 26, 2015 from 5-7 pm at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday March 28 at 10 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 326 Main Street, Yarmouth. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery in North Yarmouth later this spring. A 40 day Mass will be held for Pauline on Sunday, April 26, 2015 at 11:00 am at St. Joseph Church, 241 Hampshire Street, Lawrence, Mass.
