

South Portland- Robert L. Sargent, 85, of South Portland, passed away July 14, 2016 after battling illness for the past few years. He was born on March 29, 1931 in Boston, MA. Bob was the first of eight children of Reynolds and Mary (O’Regan) Sargent. He grew up in South Freeport and graduated from Freeport High, Class of 1950.
After high school he joined the army, serving 2 years followed by a two-year enlistment in the National Guard. From there he spent the next 30 years working at Millikin Tomlinson Company, where he became the superintendent of warehouse and transportation. Bob was known for his strong work ethic and dry sense of humor. He was a man not afraid to speak his mind, yet he was kind and dedicated to his family. Bob enjoyed boating on Casco Bay where he frequently visited the islands, although his sons claim they never saw Bob get his feet wet. He also loved to visit Hawaii from time to time.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Richmond; a brother, John and a sister, Pat.
Robert is survived by his wife of 37 years, Carole Sargent; her children Jeannie, John, Julie and Carrie; his children, Robert of South Portland, Paul of Monmouth, and William and his wife Gabriella of Scarborough; 5 grandchildren Eliza, Tyler, Allison, Justin and Bryan; 3 step-grandchildren Dustin, Lucas, and Elyah; 4 great-grandchildren, Lucas, Sawyer, Eveely, and Danny; Siblings, Nancy and her husband Vernon Young, Maureen and James Gorman, Richard and Jean Sargent, Ruth and Joseph Burke, and Paula and Steven Kloth. He is also survived by several nieces , nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held at 10 am on Friday, July 22, 2016, at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yarmouth.
