

FREEPORT- Scott Thomas Keith, 89, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Thursday July 12, 2012. He was born in Havelock, New Brunswick on May 9, 1923. One of nine children, he was the son of Anson F. and Thelma (Low) Keith. When Scott was young, the family moved from New Brunswick to South Portland for a period of time. The family then settled on the Hodsdon Road in Pownal. He attended Pownal schools and North Yarmouth Academy before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1942. He was a parachute rigger stationed in Alameda, CA, Norfolk, VA and Puerto Rico. He was honorably discharged in December 1945 was very proud to be a WWII Veteran.
Upon return from the service, Scott and his father built three houses on the Durham Road in Freeport. Two were sold and one was where Scott and his wife, Margaret, raised their three daughters. He and his father continued to work together in the woodworking business in Yarmouth, building window frames and wooden boxes for shipping seafood. Scott also worked for the Freeport Highway Department for several years and then for his longtime friend, Kenneth Vosmus, in his plumbing business. After retirement, he continued his enjoyment of working with wood by building lawn furniture and he was especially renowned for his white birch reindeer. A large herd could be seen on the front lawn from early November until Christmas for many years.
Scott loved hunting and being in the woods exploring nature. One of his greatest enjoyments was riding the back roads of Maine with his grandchildren at his side in his little pickup truck. Later in life, Scott was a strong supporter of the Freeport Community Center and the Freeport Elders Association. He was a member of the J. Arthur Stowell Post 83 of the American Legion for more than 50 years.
Surviving are his devoted wife of 69 years, Margaret (Whitcher); three daughters: Colleen Mott of Biddeford, Sharon Lee and her husband Michael of Pownal, and Rebecca (Becky) Swift and her husband Noel of Freeport. He will also be greatly missed by grandchildren Scott Lee and wife Kimberly and great-granddaughter Helen Marie Lee of Sanford; Ryan Lee and wife Alyssa of East Boston, MA; Kathryn (Katie) Nickerson and husband Seth of Kingfield; David Swift; Erin Swift and husband Pedro Quinto; and McKenzie Swift all of Freeport. He is also survived by sisters Clara Snow of Cumberland and Thelma Day of Yarmouth and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Donald, Verne, Floyd, and Leon and his sisters Gladys Libby and Greta Smith.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Monday evening July 16 from 6 to 8 P.M. in the Lindquist Funeral Home 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday July 17 at 1 P.M. in the First Parish Congregational Church in Pownal. Interment will immediately follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Pownal with military honors.
