He was born April 3, 1956 in Portland, the son of George and Martha (Malpass) Allen. Tom grew up in North Deering and spent many years raising cain with his brothers, sisters and friends in the neighborhood. He graduated from Deering High School in 1975, and attended Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute. Tom worked in real estate for a few years, but his entire career was spent at the Freeport Sewer District, many years of that as the superintendent.
Tom met Kathy in 1974 and they were married in 1978. They soon moved to Cumberland, where they lived and raised their family. Tom was quite skilled at building and home repair, and enjoyed building some of the family’s homes, but also “puttering” around the yard year round. Tom was a very proud father. He never missed any of his kids' school or sports events, and spent many years coaching soccer, softball and baseball, and being ever present on the golf course and at cross country running and skiing events. He was a regular fixture in the top row of parent spectators at Greely hockey games. He also thoroughly enjoyed all the music events over the years. Tom was a friend to all, always taking the time to stop and chat, and leaving you with a smile.
Tom was outdoors whenever he could be. He enjoyed biking, hiking, golfing and skiing, spending much of his free time in the winter at Pleasant Mountain (Shawnee Peak), and hiking most of the mountains in Maine and New Hampshire. Tom was an avid runner, was a member of the Maine Track Club, and finished many 5ks, 10ks, half marathons and marathons over the years. He loved boating and camping, with many summer weekends spent at Little Sebago Lake, and camping all over the state.
Tom is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kathy (O’Donnell) Allen; three children, Evan Allen & wife Christina, Lindsay Allen, and Brad Allen & wife Katie; four grandchildren Owen, Levi, Taylor, and Jack; his father George Allen & wife Helen, siblings George Allen & wife Susan, Karen Peterson & husband Jay, Liz Fisher, and Paul Allen & wife Lynn; and several nieces and nephews.
Tom was predeceased by his infant daughter, Katie; and mother, Martha.
Tom's family would like to extend their sincerest appreciation for all the help they have received throughout his illness.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held on Saturday, May 6th, 10 am at the Congregational Church, 282 Main Street in Cumberland.
