

Portland - Thomas H. Johns, 89, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2016 at Fallbrook Woods in Portland. He was born on December 4, 1926 in Norwich, CT, the second son of Harry & Kaliope. He grew up in Portland, graduating from PHS in 1943, at the age of 16. He served in the US Army for 2 years, obtained his Bachelors Degree from NYU, then entered the US Air Force as an officer, received his Masters Degree in Engineering, and ultimately retired in 1973 as a Lt. Col.
A life long believer in fitness, he enjoyed individual sports such as tennis, squash, handball, skiing & golf, even getting a hole in one in 1960 in Brunswick, ME.
Dad lived in various places such as England, Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, and Japan, eventually returning to Maine in his later years.
He is survived by his two brothers, Nicholas of Danbury, Connecticut and John of Portland, ME; his three daughters & their husbands - Penny & Ben Diaz, Anne & Joe Hall, Barbara & Ray Stauble; seven grandchildren - Kate, Maria, Ali, Susie, Jill, Sam & Sudeep; 12 great grandchildren & his former wife Katherine.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Alexander (Coolie) and his granddaughter Tina Browne.
Dad was forever the jokester of mostly one liners & always the first to laugh at his own jokes, sometimes uncontrollably. We leave you with one of his favorite lines which began "On the other hand..."

A graveside service will be held on Friday, November 18, 2016 at 12:30pm at Forest City Cemetery in South Portland where he will be laid to rest with his parents & brother.
