Amelia E. Capozzelli (nee Parlapiano), a lifelong Yonkers resident, died on Thursday August 15, 2013 at St. John’s Riverside Hospital. She was 87 years old. She was born in Yonkers on November 20, 1925 to Frank and Maria Bochichio Parlapiano. Her family lived on Willow Street in the Park Hill section of Yonkers. Amelia lived through the lean years of the Great Depression and greatly respected the value of hard work.Amelia was educated in the Yonkers public schools and graduated from Commerce High School in 1943. Amelia worked as a legal secretary for many years, most recently for the Family Service Society of Yonkers until her retirement. When her children were young, she worked at School # 9 in Yonkers. She was a parishioner of Christ the King Church and formerly a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church and Mt. Carmel/St. Anthony’s Church, both in Yonkers. Amelia had a deep love for her family. She worked hard to make everyone comfortable at her table. She enjoyed bringing her family and friends together. The tradition at home was to meet at her house at 2 pm for Sunday dinner. Year in and year out, we all benefited greatly from many, many fine Sunday dinners, which were a tribute to Amelia’s hard work and cooking skills. Beyond cooking, Amelia had many talents. She crocheted countless blankets, doilies, and snowflakes as baby gifts and shower gifts and plain old every day gifts. Amelia had no patience for time on her hands. She stayed busy with sewing on buttons, or laundry, or making sauce, or many of the other endless tasks that are required to make a house a home. On September 9, 1950, Amelia married her loving husband Albert Capozzelli in Mt. Carmel/St. Anthony’s Church. Mr. Capozzelli survives and lives in Yonkers. In addition to her husband, Amelia is survived by two sons, Peter Capozzelli and his wife MaryLou of Peekskill and Albert Capozzelli of Yonkers. Her oldest son, Frank Capozzelli, predeceased her. She is also survived by one sister, Connie Foti, and a daughter in law, Margaret Engel, both of Yonkers. She was predeceased by two sisters, Ann Faenza and Jennie DiLullo, and one brother, Nick Parlapiano. Amelia is survived by four grandchildren, Sergey (Michele), Jane, Natasha and Grace and one great granddaughter, Khylee. Amelia was a wonderful nonna and will be sorely missed by her grandchildren, as well as by all of us. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Christ the King Church on Monday August 19th at 10 am. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Donations in Amelia’s memory may be made to Catholic Charities of New York, 125 East 105th St., New York, N.Y. 10029.
