Bro. William Wieland, O.F.M. Cap.

William Wieland, the son of William and Anne McGee-Wieland was born on July 5, 1934 in Brooklyn, NY. He attended St. John the Baptist Elementary School in Brooklyn [1940-1948] and Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School also in Brooklyn, NY [1948-1952]. In 1984 Brother William received an Associate Degree in Occupational Therapy from La Guardia Community College, Long Island City, NY.

William served in the U.S. Army Infantry, stationed at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey from 1954-1956 and later employed by the U.S. Post Office from December 1956-April 1965.

Brother William [formerly Brother James] was invested as a novice on October 4, 1966 at St. Pius X Friary, Middletown, CT. He pronounced his perpetual vows on October 15, 1972 at St. John the Baptist Church, NYC where he ministered and resided for eleven years as sacristan, cook and porter.

Brother William served at Our Lady of Sorrows from 1981 to 1984 and again from 1992 to 2007 in a variety of ministries including: Occupational therapist, accountant, cook, receptionist, sacristan and tutor for many newly-arrived Vietnamese students.

For several years, Brother William ministered as a health-care assistant first at Mary Immaculate Friary, Garrison, NY [1984-87] and later at St. Francis Friary, Garrison, NY [1987-1992].

Br. William resided as a senior friar at St. Conrad Friary, White Plains, NY [2007]; St. Lawrence Friary, Beacon, NY [2007-09]; St. Clare Friary, Yonkers, NY [2009-15] and Cabrini Nursing Home, Dobbs Ferry, NY [2015-2017].

Brother William was survived by his sister Elaine Doster and her family of Little Neck, NY. There will be a viewing on Monday, January 23, 2017 from 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. at St. Clare Friary, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY 10703. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, Yonkers, NY on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. The Interment will be held at the Province of St. Mary Cemetery, Yonkers, NY following the funeral liturgy.
