Dominick J. Femia, a retired landscape contractor, died on May 9, 2014. He was 83 years old. Noted for his soft spoken demeanor, it belied an adventuresome attitude as a youth. For example, Dominick thought nothing of building a rowboat with hand tools and convincing his younger brother, Joseph, to join him rowing across the Hudson River, from Yonkers to Alpine, N.J. without life jackets. Poor caulking caused a leak and a coffee can was used to bail out the water. The boat never set sail again. Next he tried his hand at flying by joining the Civil Air Patrol in Yonkers and at age 17 he soloed in a Pipercub seaplane following just eight hours of instruction. A multi-talented man, his interests also included stock car racing, photography, prospecting and raising chincillas. He was an avid bowler, who won several trophies in a company league. Mr. Femia formed his own landscaping company in the 1960’s. Born in Italy he was the son of the late Giuseppe and Rose Femia. He graduated from Saunders Trades and Technical High School and served 8 years with the United States Navy. In addition to Joseph and his wife Arlene of Bronxville,N.Y. he is also survived by another brother Albert of Yonkers, a niece Michelle Jorge and her husband Rui of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., a nephew David Femia and his wife Rebecca of Philadelphia, Pa. and their respective families. Visitation will be at the Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Monday May 12th. From 2-4 & 7-9pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be at Sacred Heart Church on Tuesday May 13th. at 9:30am with interment to follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
